Land Acknowledgment

Individual and collective racial healing is impossible without land. We learn and speak the original names of the lands we occupy and the Indigenous peoples to whom those lands belong as a way of restorative practice.

STRONGHOLD’s work is based in unceded xučyun (Huichin) territory of the Lisjan Ohlone people (what is now known as the East Bay in the SF Bay Area). We honor the Chochenyo-speaking Lisjan people who have and continue to belong to this land generation after generation.

We uplift the work of the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust, an urban Indigenous women-led land trust that is facilitating the rematriation of Indigenous land to Indigenous people. We invite folks in our community to pay Shuumi Land Tax, which is a small step towards acknowledging the histories of colonization and present day struggles for sovereignty on this land. As Corrina Gould shares, we contribute to the healing and “re-storying” of the land through a framework of relationship, responsibility and reciprocity. Sogorea Te’ suggests that giving Shuumi can look a myriad of ways, including and not limited to: volunteering at one of their gardens, educating oneself and their communities about the Indigenous history and present day Indigenous-led efforts of the East Bay, as well as organizing those around you to give Shuumi.

For folks outside of the so-called Bay Area, we encourage you to engage in resources on building solidarity with Indigenous communities and seek out land rematriation projects and Indigenous-led organizing efforts in local struggles of recognition.
